Breast carcinoma originates in the breast tissue. Abnormal cells in the breast grow and multiply uncontrollably, forming a tumour. This is commonly known as breast cancer. Surgical procedures for breast carcinoma include Lumpectomy or Mastectomy. A sample of breast tissue is first taken and examined under a microscope to determine if cancer cells are present. The patient will have a discussion with one of the best female surgeons, Dr.Preethi Mrinalini about the treatment options and their potential side effects to make informed decisions. The surgery is then performed by the surgeon to remove the tumour and a thin layer of the surrounding tissue or the entire breast tissue depending upon the stage of cancer. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled for physical examinations, mammograms, and other imaging tests.
This involves the removal of breast tissue completely as a preventive measure for individuals at high risk of developing breast cancer. This surgical procedure is called mastectomy. Whereas lumpectomy is breast-conserving surgery or partial mastectomy. The patient has to go through a thorough evaluation including clinical breast examination, imaging studies (such as mammography, ultrasound, or MRI), and biopsy to determine the presence of cancerous cells and the extent of the disease. The size and location of the incision made to access the underlying tissue depends on the type of mastectomy being performed. In nipple-sparing or skin-sparing mastectomies, the nipple and areola complex or breast skin are not removed. The surgeon removes one or both the breasts including the tumour. Medications are provided to manage any discomfort. Depending on the medical recommendations, breast reconstruction may be performed during the same surgery or as a separate procedure at a later stage. Appointments will be scheduled with our chief consultant Dr. Preethi Mrinalini to assess the effectiveness of the treatment during the recovery process.
