What was the function of the thyroid gland?

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped organ located in the anterior part of the body, just under the cartilage known as Adam’s apple. It’s around 20 grammes in weight. Hormones that are essential to our bodies are secreted by the gland.Thyroid gland produces T3 and T4 hormones. These hormones circulate in the bloodstream, regulating our metabolism and controlling our metabolic rate. In various organs and tissues of the body, it affects several functions of various body systems, such as heart rate, cholesterol level, bodyweight, mood, and menstrual cycle. Thyroid gland diseases are found in about 30-40% of the population.

Thyroid swelling is referred to as a goitre. Goiters may be benign or indicate iodine deficiency or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, a disease characterised by thyroid inflammation.

Thyroid hormone development is excessive in hyperthyroidism. Graves disease or an overactive thyroid nodule are the most common causes of hyperthyroidism.
Hypothyroidism is characterised by a decrease in thyroid hormone production. The most common cause of hypothyroidism is thyroid damage caused by autoimmune disorder.
Graves disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes hyperthyroidism by overstimulating the thyroid.
Thyroid cancer is a rare, normally curable form of cancer. Thyroid cancer can be treated with surgery, radiation, and hormone therapy.

Treatment

The treatment for thyroid disorders helps restore normal thyroid hormone levels in the body. The procedure will be performed on an outpatient basis and requires careful monitoring of thyroid hormone levels following treatment. Two most common thyroid disorders are hypothyroidism – underactive thyroid, and hyperthyroidism – overactive thyroid.

In severe cases, the surgical removal of all or part of the thyroid gland is necessary. This surgery is known as thyroidectomy. It is often performed when treating thyroid cancer or in cases of large goitres, suspicious nodules, or severe hyperthyroidism. Our surgeon will review your medical history, including any medications the patient is taking and any allergies they might have. During the procedure, incisions are made and the surgeon safely removes the thyroid gland. The surgeon will then provide specific instructions for postoperative care and medications to manage any discomfort or pain during the recovery period.
