what was the function of the thyroid gland?

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped organ located in the anterior part of the body, just under the cartilage known as Adam’s apple. It’s around 20 grammes in weight. Hormones that are essential to our bodies are secreted by the gland.Thyroid gland produces T3 and T4 hormones. These hormones circulate in the bloodstream, regulating our metabolism and controlling our metabolic rate. In various organs and tissues of the body, it affects several functions of various body systems, such as heart rate, cholesterol level, bodyweight, mood, and menstrual cycle. Thyroid gland diseases are found in about 30-40% of the population.

Common diseases of thyroid gland

  • Thyroid swelling is referred to as a goitre. Goiters may be benign or indicate iodine deficiency or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, a disease characterised by thyroid inflammation.
  • Thyroiditis is thyroid inflammation caused by a viral infection or an autoimmune disorder. Thyroiditis may be debilitating or go unnoticed for long periods of time.
  • Thyroid hormone development is excessive in hyperthyroidism. Graves disease or an overactive thyroid nodule are the most common causes of hyperthyroidism.
  • Hypothyroidism is characterised by a decrease in thyroid hormone production. The most common cause of hypothyroidism is thyroid damage caused by autoimmune disorder.
  • Graves disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes hyperthyroidism by overstimulating the thyroid.
  • Thyroid cancer is a rare, normally curable form of cancer. Thyroid cancer can be treated with surgery, radiation, and hormone therapy.
  • Thyroid nodule a thyroid nodule is a small irregular mass or lump in the gland. Thyroid nodules are a very common occurrence. Just a few of them are cancerous. They may secrete too many hormones, resulting in hyperthyroidism, or they may not.
  • Thyroid storm is a rare type of hyperthyroidism in which the thyroid hormone levels are abnormally elevated and cause serious illness.

Treatment

  • Thyroid surgery (thyroidectomy) is a procedure in which a surgeon removes all or part of the thyroid gland. Thyroid cancer, goitre, and hyperthyroidism are all reasons for a thyroidectomy.
  • Antithyroid drugs  that slow down the overproduction of thyroid hormone in hyperthyroidism are known as antithyroid drugs. Methimazole and propylthiouracil are two popular antithyroid medications.
  • Radioactive iodine is radioactive iodine that can be used in low doses to test or kill an overactive thyroid gland. Cancerous tissue can be destroyed with large doses. External radiation: During several visits, a beam of radiation is aimed at the thyroid.
  • The high-energy rays aid in the destruction of thyroid cancer cells. Thyroid hormone pills are a daily injection that replaces the thyroid hormone that your body no longer produces.
  • Thyroid hormone pills are used to treat hypothyroidism and to help prevent thyroid cancer from returning following treatment.
  • Injecting recombinant human TSH, a thyroid-stimulating agent, may help thyroid cancer show up more clearly on imaging tests.
